that describes how to speed up firefox by disabling some codepaths:
env MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=1 firefox &
I don't have numbers, but it does feel faster, on a 800MHz PC running NetBSD 4.0_BETA2/i386 with firefox2-gtk1. Thanks Blair!
