[20161124] Apple Releases macOS 10.12 Sierra Open Source Darwin Code
Interesting news come in via slashdot: Apple Releases macOS 10.12 Sierra Open Source Darwin Code: ``Apple has released the open source Darwin code for macOS 10.12 Sierra. The code, located on Apple's open source website, can be accessed via direct link now, although it doesn't yet appear on the site's home page. The release builds on a long-standing library of open source code that dates all the way back to OS X 10.0. There, you'll also find the Open Source Reference Library, developer tools, along with iOS and OS X Server resources. The lowest layers of macOS, including the kernel, BSD portions, and drivers are based mainly on open source technologies, collectively called Darwin. As such, Apple provides download links to the latest versions of these technologies for the open source community to learn and to use.''

This may not only be of interest to the OpenDarwin folks (or rather their successors in PureDarwin) but more investigation not only on the code itself, but also the license it is released under is neccessary to learn if anything can be gained back for NetBSD.

Why "back"? As you may or may not remember, mac OS includes some parts of NetBSD (besides lots of FreeBSD, probably some OpenBSD, much other Open Source software and sure a big lot of Apple's own code).

[20100516] Apple Magic Mouse driver
NetBSD's Bluetooth hacker #1, Iain Hibbert, wrote on tech-kern: ``I wrote a driver for the Apple Magic Mouse, as the protocol was mostly decoded by a Linux developer, and Somebody was kind enough to send me one. [...]

The mouse itself is a wireless Bluetooth mouse and operates with the USB HID protocol much like other mice, but it doesn't provide a proper descriptor and requires features to be activated and special interpretations of the touch surface reports, so doesn't fit exactly into our HID framework, which configures independent sub-devices to report id's from the descriptor.

The driver interprets the touch reports to allow emulation of a middle mouse button (for mulitple firm touches detected), and horizontal and vertical scroll actions (for touches moving over a certain distance). It works well on NetBSD-current and NetBSD-5 and the mouse is pretty slick. '' See Iain's posting for more details.

[20070310] Apple HFS+ support: call for testers
Dieter 'dillo' Baron has picked up the 2005 Summer-of-Code project to get HFS+ support, and he has committed it into NetBSD-current now. Besides the filesystem (which is read-only right now) there's also a new program to deal with apple partition maps. See dillo's mail for more details.

[20070217] AirPort Extreme Base Station: Apple Breaks 90 Mbps ... with NetBSD
Google News dug up this gem: There's a report about Apple's new AirPort Extreme Base Station that does 802.11n, and as a side note it mentions that the machine runs NetBSD as operating system. No official confirmation yet (anyone?), but I've heared some somewhere else that the machine runs a variant of NetBSD/arm.

[20061009] NetBSD on Intel MacMini - report and dmesg
Peter Seebach has given NetBSD on his Intel-based MacMini a try. Given Apple's different approach to things like BIOS and MBR partition tables this was a bit funky, but using BootCamp he has succeeded and also posted a dmesg output.

[20060808] Intel MacOS X kernel/Darwin Open Source again
Following an announcement from Apple, they apparently opened up the Intel Mac OS X kernel/Darwin sources again, after closing them a few weeks ago. Also available are "Mac OS Forge" for Community Projects, the iCal Calendaring Server is now available in source, as are the Apache-Licensed Bonjour and Launchd sources.

The Darwin sources are available here.

[20050531] Apple's ip6config
From the "cool, they use my code"-department: I found that Apple ships an "ip6config" (same directory on Apple site, requires login) command to setup 6to4 and router advertizement that is heavily based on NetBSD's pkgsrc/net/hf6to4 script, written by yours truly. Wow, made my day - you don't discover that a major OS vendor ships your code every day. :-)

To those wondering: the script only contained a one-line copyright notice, and I'm very happy to find my code used; not as in the GPL "argh, they use my code" variant :).

(Now where can I pick up that 12" PowerBook I'd love to have? :-)

[20050409] Article: Running Linux and BSD on the Mac Mini
In this article (hosted by IBM, maker of the POWER and PowerPC CPUs used in Apple computers today), Peter Seebach reports that NetBSD and Yellow Dog Linux have both begun to support the Mac Mini. He looks at open source operating system options on this new contender in the embedded PowerPC platform space.

[20050121] NetBSD on MacMini - dmesg
Apparently the most effort in porting NetBSD to the newly announced Apple MacMini was getting the hardware. Matt Thomas got one, and has posted a mail with the dmesg output of NetBSD on the MacMini to the port-macppc list. Anyone got one for me? :)
