[20101112] robopkg: pkgsrc for robotics software
Anthony Mallet pointed me at his robopkg effort: ``robotpkg is a compilation framework and packaging system for installing robotics software developed by the robotic community. It also contains many third-party open-source packages that the robotics software depends on.

robotpkg is based on the NetBSD Package System, also known as pkgsrc.''

Based on pkgsrc, the system is targetted at Mac OS X / Darwin, Fedora Linux and NetBSD. See the homepage for more information.

[20080919] NetBSD ROTFLing - literally (video)
I've reported that there is a NetBSD-based robot out there before, but so far I haven't seen it beyond pictures. I've stumbled across some videos now, showing voice recognition and face detection with that robot. But best of it all is that the robot can also do a thing that's said that only humans can do it: Roll On The Floor Laughing! :-)

[20060919] Article: Meet MI-RAI-RT, from the maker of AIBO
Google News discovered another news article about NetBSD being used in robotics: After discontinuing their famous Aibo, its creator went to Speecys Corp to produce a (literally) singing and dancing humanoid robot that's running NetBSD as operating system. See this video for some impressive dance performance by a bunch of robots. It's not exactly cheap at $2.4kUS, though.

[20060404] "Internet Renaissance Robot" shuns chores, entertains instead
Google news found this gem: ``the ITR bot works with its very own "RTML" language to present media with motion, voice, and emotion. Of course, this means content developers will have to create RTML content to be displayed by the humanoid bot, but it's an interesting concept at least, and we look forward to seeing what happens. We can't say we're as optimistic as the Speecy Corporation, which dreams of the ITR being fifth major form of household media after radio, TV, PC, and mobile phone. The robot itself runs on a NetBSD-based OS, houses 168 LEDS, stereo speakers, a USB port, and a miniSD slot.''

Besides the original article on engadget, another article about it can be found on Pinc Tentacle.

[20060321] Of course it runs (with) NetBSD: Robotic Software Simulator (Updated)
Google news found me this gem on design news: ``Tokyo-based, Speecys Corp., has developed a simulation software platform designed to aid in robot development. Demonstrated through a prototype of the SPC-003 robot, the software uses a combination of SolidWorks, 3D CAD and COSMOSMotion, and a mechanical analysis simulator. With the software platform, a design engineer can verify robotic motion before prototyping a robot.

[...]

The Real Motion System consists of a robotic software development tool for programming control of robotic walking, software for implementing robotic motion, robot prototype, its 3D CAD data and mechanical simulation tool. The OS embedded in the SPC-003 is based on a UNIX-compatible NetBSD, facilitating smooth data communication between SolidWorks and COSMOSMotion. ''

Update: There are a few other projects that use NetBSD in robot research at the Robot Brain project and at Futuba with more humanoid robots.

[20041118] NetBSD powered robot (updated)
This robot works with NetBSD as operating system. Aparently Brains Inc., maker of the NetBSD-powered mmmEye webcam, worked on the software. See here for some details on the firmware.

Update: See the homepage for more information, in case the above links are dead, some upto-date tech-details and a message telling that Speecys uses NetBSD are also there.
