[20070622] NetBSD's tmpfs ported to FreeBSD
JMMV writes in his blog that NetBSD's tmpfs was ported to FreeBSD. The FreeBSD Wiki has a bit more information.

[20061109] tmpfs improvements
Last year's tmpfs Summer-of-Code project has been integrated into NetBSD for some time now under an 'experimental' status. After discussion a few weeks ago, author Julio Merino Vidal fixed another round of nits that made tmpfs all good & shiny, Julio's posting to tech-kern. With those changes, I think we can hope to see tmpfs as non-experimental in NetBSD 4.0.

[20051004] Big numbers 1: MFS vs. TMPFS
Answering a pending question on "mfs vs. tmpfs", Simon Burge has done some testing to compare memory usage and execution times on a number of common operatins on the traditional MFS which uses UFS datastructures and cannot free them (i.e. which is "grow-only) over NetBSD's new Summer-of-Code resulted TMPFS, which does not have these drawbacks.

Looks like a pretty clear winner!

[20050925] tmpfs stability
The SoC tmpfs-author Julio M. Merino Vidal has posted about the status of his tmpfs and that it's getting to a point where it should be able to replace mfs. Anyone daring to test it? Extracting pkgsrc.tar.gz in 10 seconds sounds nice.

[20050911] tmpfs added to NetBSD (Updated)
Julio M. Merino Vidal has committed the work on the "tmpfs" Summer-of-Code project into NetBSD. The long-term goal is to use tmpfs to replace the existing MFS, which ``is an implementation of the on-disk FFS file-system over memory pages. It is not "memory-friendly" because it arranges data as if it was using a disk. Furthermore, it never releases memory pages, which makes it unusable in several scenarios. OTOH, tmpfs uses data structures that can easily exist in memory and works closely with UVM to handle many things transparently (basically, regular files).'' In other words: mfs can only grow but never shrink and free up the memory it ocupies, while tmpfs will free memory again when files are removed.

For all information on how to enable tmpfs, run a regression test and where to find documentation about the internals of tmpfs see Julio's posting to tech-kern.

Update: See also jmmv's blog for information on the import and the latest changes!

[20050826] NetBSD-SoC: tmpfs: Project's code ready
Julio M. Merino Vidal has a first version of his SoC project available for public testing - he's working on tmpfs, a mfs replacement which was designed to free memory when files are deleted, allowing it not only to grow but also to shrink when files get deleted (something that mfs doesn't do). Check out his posting!
