[20080218] Lehmanns NetBSD 4.0 CD-ROM Set and FreeX article on installing NetBSD 4.0
The german online bookshop Lehmanns has published a NetBSD 4.0 CD-ROM set. The set contains four CDs:
  1. Installation sets and precompiled binary packages for NetBSD/i386
  2. Installation sets for amd64, macppc, sparc and sparc64
  3. Installation sets for amiga, alpha, atari, mac68k, netxt68k and sun3
  4. Sources
Those who need help installing NetBSD 4.0 can find a german-language article on installing NetBSD 4.0 in the 2/2008 issue of the FreeX magazine. The article's also online as PDF. Enjoy! The print issue of the magazine also comes with a copy of NetBSD 4.0 for i386 and amd64 plus 1.200 precompiled binary packages on DVD.

[20060427] Lehmanns Linuxtag 2-DVD includes a *BSD-DVD (or: how to make a *BSD bootable DVD) (Updated)
German Bookstore JF Lehmanns will produce the DVD with the proceedings for the german Linuxtag, which is said to be the biggest event about Linux and Open Source in Europe.

The interesting news is, that the DVD is actually a double-DVD, and that the second one contains four BSD distributions for installation: NetBSD, FreeBSD, DragonflyBSD, and OpenBSD. The DVD is bootable, and a boot selector (kudos to Oliver Fromme!) allows selecting which operating system to boot. For NetBSD, the CD can not only be booted on i386 systems, but there's are also 64bit (amd64) install sets and packages available on the CD.

The double-DVD can be ordered online at the JF Lehmanns bookshop for 7,50EUR for a limited time, and 10EUR later on.

I took the NetBSD-part for making the BSD-DVD, and working with Oliver Fromme to make a bootable DVD for several operating systems was pretty interesting: First I suggested using GRUB, but that can only boot NetBSD kernels and no OpenBSD and FreeBSD. As each operating system did provide a ISO9660 (CD)-bootblock, Oliver wrote a new CD-bootloader that allowed selecting which of the CD-Bootloaders stored in files on the CD to boot. That way, selecting the FreeBSD, NetBSD and OpenBSD CD-bootloader was a breeze. For NetBSD, actually several copies of bootxx_cd9660 were made that then booted different 2nd stage bootloaders (/boot), which in turn booted different kernels: i386/INSTALL, i386/INSTALL_LAPTOP, i386/INSTALL_TINY and amd64/INSTALL.

Update: English-language visitors can order the CD by finding the "Add to cart"-link on the Lehmanns page, the ordering process will be in english then.

[20060112] Working on the NetBSD 3.0 5-CD-set
In the past few days, I've been working to get a 5-CD set with NetBSD 3.0 available, together with JF Lehmanns. After I didn't make the binary packages this time, I had to wait for them to appear on the NetBSD FTP server, but creating a CD with packages for NetBSD/i386 and the PC installation sets went smooth, and the set will contain that CD plus the three official Multiboot-CDs plus a CD that contains all sources (including the latest pkgsrc stable snapshot, in contrast to what TNF/releng produced).

Right now the CD masters are in the mail and we're hashing out the cover design. Orders are already possible, see the NetBSD 3.0 5-CD-sets's webpage.

[20040619] Lehmanns BSD Collection DVD
German bookshop JF Lehmanns is producing a Lehmanns BSD Collection DVD containing install sets and precompiled binary packages of FreeBSD 5.2.1, NetBSD 1.6.2 and 2.0_BETA as well as OpenBSD 3.5 on a single DVD. For NetBSD, the DVD contains 1.6.2 for all platforms (install sets), 1.6.2/i386 binary packages as well as 2.0_BETA/i386 install sets.

There will be 10.000 of these DVDs, and they will be available for free at the Linuxtag in Karlsruhe.
